Songwriting

These are notes from my "Worship Songwriting Class". Sorry if they're a little cryptic. I'm passionate about this art and craft and will be posting a more in-depth teaching series in the near future.

Songwriting Session 1:

SONGWRITING BASICS – Form & Structure

Analyze A GOOD (WORSHIP) SONG...

Use “I Could Sing of Your Love Forever” as a model of a good simple worship song for illustrating.

•  Basic song form & construction

•  Melodic repetition, theme & development in the verse

•  Lyric & Melodic repetition   in the chorus

•  Vivid visual lyrics in the verse

•  Classic bridge - new melodic & thematic material that pays off in the chorus

•  Chorus can stand alone for endless repetition

•  Song continues to endure as a favorite – “a classic”

Elaborate upon the following concepts:

ELEMENTS:

•  Song - Words associated with melody, harmony, and rhythm

•  Cadence – natural rhythmic pattern (flow) of words (as opposed to awkward, unnatural flow)

•  Music – Time signatures (4 & 3), musical phrase – 4 bars common, natural

•  Communicating feeling/emotion through melody

•  Lyrics – is this a natural way to say or phrase this idea? Does it connect?

•  Prosody– does the emotional tone of the music fit the message of the lyric

SONG STRUCTURE:

•  AABA

•  ABABCBB

•  Verse – What is a …

•  Chorus - What is a …

•  Bridge - What is a …

CRAFT:

•  Simplicity

•  Does the song tell story?

•  Are the lyrics visual?

•  Are the 5 senses involved?

•  Beginning, build, climax (pay-off),

•  Tension/Release

•  Rhyme schemes
