Jesus, by his life, his teaching, his death, resurrection and ongoing intercession, makes known to us God as our heavenly Father.
The mission statement of YWAM (Youth With A Mission) Â is “to know God, and to make him known”.
That’s pretty good. And that’s what Jesus as Emmanuel, “God with us”, did. He revealed everything we needed to know about God.
In this “Season of Light” we’re on a mission to re-discover, re-think, re-imagine – who God is and what He is like, through the life of Jesus.
When John wrote this prologue, that was the promise he made. He had been with Jesus. He knew Jesus intimately.
One of the primary names of God as revealed in the Old Testament is El Elyon (“Most High God”), it means He is sovereign of the universe, transcendent, mysterious and “not like us..â€
By contrast, Jesus is God in the flesh. He is “knowable.†We could see him, we could touch, and we could hear his voice. He was “real”, he was not an abstract idea.
Eugene Peterson describes Jesus as a living breathing, historical person in his very fine theology book “Christ Plays in 10,000 Placesâ€
“Jesus is the personal name of a person who lived at a datable time in an actual land that has mountains we can still climb, wildflowers that can be photographed, cities in which we can still buy dates and pomegranates, and water which we drink and in which we can be baptized.
Jesus is the central and defining figure in the spiritual life. His life is, precisely, revelation. He brings out into the open what we could never have figured out for ourselves , never guessed in a million years. He is “God among us.†God speaking, acting, healing, helping. Salvation is the big word into which all these words fit. The name Jesus means “God savesâ€. God present and at work saving in our language, and in our history. .
The four gospels tell us everything we need to know about Jesus. And Jesus tells us everything we need to know about God. Eugene Peterson, “Christ Plays in 10,000 Places†(Part 2, 1:40 – 2:50)
The man Jesus made and makes God known to all humanity. May you grow in your relationship with Him in this season of your life.
Prayer
Lord Jesus open the eyes of our hearts that we may see you in all your glory. Reveal to us the Father, that we may know our Father the way you knew Him when you lived and breathed and walked among us here on earth. We ask in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.Â
About Season Of Light
I am writing a devotional series called “Season of Light†(#SeasonOfLife) during the beginning of 2016, focusing on the 40 day season of Epiphany (from January 6 – February 10). We’ll explore the major biblical themes of the beginning of Jesus ministry, and I’ll comment as the Holy Spirit inspires. This is for the purpose of growing in our relationship with the Lord. My desire – my hope and prayer for you – is that your heart may expand and your spirit grow brighter as we seek to be filled with the knowledge and presence of God. So, I invite you to join me on the “Season of Light†journey!
