SUNDAY SETLISTS

Worship Team at HFUMC, Jan 8 2012

Today had to be the largest attendance so far at the new and growing Contemporary Worship service at Hendersonville First United Methodist Church, TN.

God is doing something special here.

Here’s the worship recap with my crib notes.

  • Prayer of Confession (#890 in the hymnal)
    • Most liturgical services begin with this prayer from the Book of Common Prayer. I love it early in the service because we start from the place of repentance and humbling ourselves.
  • Open the Eyes of My Heart
    • This was really fun with a guitar riff inspired by the Doobie Brothers “Listen to the Music”.
  • All Hail the Power of Jesus Name
    • We added a little spontaneous chorus after the second verse and the end:

Crown Him Lord of all
You are Lord of all
Jesus Lord of all
And Crown Him Lord of all

  • Better is One Day
    •  This is a good song of adoration. I like to let it breathe sonically and arrange it with simplicity and acoustic space. I don’t use drum groove with heavy toms familiar from the early recorded versions.
  • Message: “Linked In: The Means of Grace” Series #1 – Prayer
    • A great sermon from Don and very timely. At our worship team rehearsal this week we had a robust dialogue about praying out loud.
  • Response: Open the Eyes of My Heart
    • As a reprise, we did this low intensity and more contemplative as a prayer response. Good bye, Doobie Bros.
  • Closing Song: “Hold Us Together(the whole song)
    • This was the first time we’ve done the entire Matt Maher song. It’s very cool. The chorus has become a very well liked tradition as the closing song at Benediction.

How’s your voice doing this winter?

For practical vocal tips, see my post on Vocal Health Tips For Singers.

I was a little concerned before the service because I’m fighting a scratchy throat. The cold weather, low humidity and vocal fatigue are not a good combination. I followed my own advice from this article on Vocal Health Tips and made it through ok.
