I wrote this prayer to find words of intercession when the earthquakes were striking Japan in 2011. It was my second blog post and has ranked as one of my highest page views.  It’s been on my mind since the Costa Concordia disaster.

What follows is an edited version that can be applied in different contexts.

A Prayer For Times of Disaster

God we acknowledge that you are Elohim, the Most High God, Maker and Creator of the universe.  We acknowledge that you are sovereign, and you alone rule the heavens and the earth.

Show your mercy to the people of ___________ in this time of disaster.

Father show yourself as loving, gracious, compassionate and altogether good. Release provision for those needing food, shelter, water, medical supplies and every human need.

In the name of Jesus we ask that you would bring healing to the injured, miraculous deliverance to those still in danger, abundant strength to those serving in rescue and reconstruction.

Holy Spirit, we pray that you would be the source of comfort for those in mourning, confusion and despair. Release the spirit of generosity among your people, that we may be a blessing to those whom you love so much.

Arise Oh Lord and show yourself great. We ask for your help in this time of need.

In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Amen.

How can you explain the unexplainable? How can you make sense of the senseless? How can we have confidence that God really is good all the time?

My song “No Easy Answers” explores that. See the video or download it for free here.
